Skin Care

The DPL skin care line was designed for individuals with special skin needs. If you have very dry or sensitive skin you may find some of these products useful.

Dry skin is caused by a lack of moisture. The natural lipids in the skin help to maintain the right amount of moisture in the skin to keep it healthy. Your skin characteristics are determined by your genes and your environment. Apart from inherited dry skin, dry climates, dry heat and excessive bathing can cause or aggravate dry skin. The skin needs adequate moisture to maintain its elasticity and protective function. Moistures goes in and out of the skin depending on one's environment. When the skin maintains adequate moisture it is considered well hydrated. Inadequately hydrated skin can lead to skin rashes, itching and discoloration. All of the DPL skin care products are designed to help keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

The following tips will help you take better care of your skin:
  1. Avoid soaps that leave your skin very dry
  2. Avoid excessive bathing. Once a day is usually adequate for most of us
  3. Alternate showers with tub baths if possible and use a good bath oil. Baby oil or mineral oil alone is not adequate
  4. Apply a good lotion or cream after bathing while the skin is still moist.
If you have to use heat when the weather is cold consider adding a humidifier to your heating unit. If that is not possible consider a portable unit.

Anti-Spam Policy

In absence of any other policy, DPLProducts.com has adopted the Anti-Spam and privacy policy of it's hosting provider, WebApplica.

Spam is absolutely prohibited by WebApplica clients. WebApplica and all sites on the CoolerServer Platform (CSP) support ONLY permission-based email marketing practices using the CSP or affiliated partner sites. In this regard, WebApplica has implemented some of the strictest policies in the email industry and supporting procedures that:

  • Help prevent the ByInviteOnly system from being used for the purpose of unsolicited email campaigns.
  • Encourage permission-based marketing.
  • Respond to all complaints suggesting the CSP or affiliated partner sites have been used as a vehicle to send unsolicited email.

WebApplica actively monitors import lists and outgoing emails for suspiciously large intended or actual broadcasts. Any customer found to be using the CSP or affiliated partner sites for Spam is subject to being permanently barred from ever using CSP or affiliated partner sites systems.

Spam is unsolicited commercial email, junk mail or bulk mail that has not been requested by the recipient. In addition to wasting valuable resources and time, it is intrusive, irrelevant and often offensive, Typically, spam emails do not contain an option to unsubscribe from the mailing list. Spam is the opposite of permission-based emails ---- those that are anticipated, personal, relevant and often associated with a "pre-existing business or personal relationship."

Preventing Unsolicited Emails Via the CSP or affiliated partner sites system

Users of the CSP or affiliated partner sites must abide by a strictly enforced End User License Agreement. Under this agreement, the user promises to not abuse the CSP or affiliated partner sites system or to send spam. User specifically agrees not to send unsolicited bulk email, for commercial or non-commercial purposes (unsolicited bulk email is defined as email sent to more than 10 individuals without their permission). The agreement also includes such provisions as:

User agrees not to post, upload or otherwise transmit:

  • any content related to inappropriate subject matters;
  • any content to "rented" or "purchased" lists;
  • any content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
  • any content that you do not have a right to post and transmit under any law or contractual/fiduciary relationships;
  • any content, such that such posting, uploading, or transmission constitutes the infringement of any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights of any party;
  • any materials that contain software viruses or any other computer code, files or programs designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment;
  • any materials which imposes an unreasonable large load on our infrastructure;
  • any content that is harmful to minors;
  • content that intentionally or unintentionally violates any applicable local, state, national or international law, including, but not limited to, regulations promulgated by the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, any rules of national or other securities exchange, including without limitation, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ, and any regulations having the force of law;
  • content that is misleading or impersonates any person or entity or falsely states or otherwise misrepresents your affiliation with a person or entity;
  • content with manipulated, or forged identifiers;
  • content promoting harm or providing instructional information about illegal activities;

With regard to email campaigns, all users of CSP or affiliated partner sites must also accept that an unsubscribe option will be automatically appended to every email sent to more than 100 people via the CSP or affiliated partner sites. This is mandatory. When the unsubscribe option is requested by an email recipient, the CSP or affiliated partner sites system automatically suppresses emails to that email address in future campaigns. This suppression feature is also mandatory.

In the event that a CSP system User violates any one of our usage rules on the CSP or affiliated partner sites, or for any other reason deemed appropriate by WebApplica or affiliated partner sites, WebApplica reserves the right to suspend or terminate, without notice, access to the CSP or affiliated partner sites system User's account and all related data. We rely on feedback from various governmental and industry sources, a network of the leading ISP's in the world and millions of email recipients to assist in our policing against spam. If you send an email out through the CSP or affiliated partner sites that generates a spam complaint, you will be responsible for providing an opt-in record for the complaint at issue. Any spam complaints that are not successfully appealed are assessed a $75 fine. Additional fines may be assesed by affiliate partner sites

Permission-Based Marketing

The CSP and/or affiliated partner sites offers frees tools to encourage system Users to create and manage "opt-in" (and double opt-in) lists of contacts. By building and using an "opt-in" (and double opt-in) lists, system Users can be certain that they are sending emails to recipients that have expressly given their permission to do so.

Recommended Action --- Unsolicited Email Complaints

If a complaint is received by WebApplica regarding alleged unsolicited emails being sent from our system tools, an immediate investigation is undertaken.

Warning -- The system User is notified that an unsolicited email complaint has been lodged against them and a demand is issued to "show proof" that the complainant opted in to the User's list. The User is reminded of the terms they accepted in the End User License Agreement (including possible legal ramifications if the user has is guilty of spamming). In addition, the complainant's email address is automatically tagged as "unsubscribed" if the complainant did unsubscribe--so no further emails are sent to the complainant. The User is also required to manually remove the complainant's email address from their contact list if the complainant did not unsubscribe.

Termination---If WebApplica or affiliated partner sites have ANY reason to believe the User, despite the warnings, is or will continue to send unsolicited bulk email to more than 10 individuals without their permission, or any complainant who has previously unsubscribed, the User's ByInviteOnly account privileges are subject to immediate termination.

Think You've Been Spammed?

  1. Immediately unsubscribe using the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the email.
  2. Forward the unsolicited email to Abuse@WebApplica.com and provide any other information that you believe may help us in our investigation.

WebApplica and WebApplica partners take permission marketing very seriously. Thank you for reviewing our Anti-Spam Policy.

Many spam complaints are registered with anti-spam agencies. We fully support the efforts of agencies working to responsibly curtail the sending of unsolicited commercial email. However, if an individual opted-in to receive an email and then falsely and/or maliciously files a spam complaint against WebApplica or affiliated partner sites, we will cooperate fully with appropriate agencies to ban the user from further use of anti-spam software and community.

Children's Hair

DPL wants to help you preserve your child's hair. Many of the hair grooming techniques used by African-Americans are very damaging to the hair of young girls.

The most common problem is hair loss caused by pulling the hair too tight around the edges. This usually results in pimples and pus bumps along the edges and eventual hair loss. This condition is called "Traction Alopecia". Click on hair loss

DPL  has several products that can assist in the upkeep of your child's hair. Depending on the texture of the hair one can use any of the products for curly perms and natural hair styles. All of these products are designed to moisten and condition the hair. One should start using these products on the child's hair as soon as the baby hair  is shed.  Both girls and boys can use these products.

For very tight and difficult to comb hair, use the DPL Hair Root Conditioner to detangle and ease the combing process.

The second problem is too early use of relaxers. Dr. Wilborn is against the use of relaxers in children. Loose ponytails or braids are the best hair styles for young girls. The DPL Instant Moisturizer and Hair Root Conditioner are an excellent combination for keeping tight hair moist and easy to comb.

Other Scalp Conditions

If your child has dandruff, bumps, sores or unexplained patches of hair loss then they should be checked for ringworm. If you are repeatedly getting ringworms on your skin the source is most likely a child whom you care for or hug. Dr. Wilborn sees numerous children with this problem whose physician mistakenly diagnose seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis usually will not occur until puberty. If ringworm of the scalp is diagnosed the treatment must be internal not external.

Hair Loss

To better understand the causes of hair loss one needs some understanding of the Anatomy and Chemistry of the normal human hair follicle. Human hair continually cycles through three phases of growth. Anagen, Catagen and Telogen described below. The hair shaft in gray and the sebaceous gland (oil gland) in white share a common opening (pore). Hair contains  keratin, a protein that is made of minuet fibers and glue like material that holds the fibers in place. The inner part of the hair shaft is called the cortex and is surrounded by the cuticle. The cuticle is similar to the scale of a fish and prevents the hair shaft from deteriorating.

Anagen Catagen Telogen  Cuticles of hair shaft
Follicle   Follicle   Follicle   under high magnification

  1. Anagen - The active growth phase lasting 3 or more years and represents 90 - 95% of the hair follicles at any given time. The hair follicle consists of several layers.
  2. Catagen - This is the phase between the active growth phases (anagen) and the resting phase (telogen). This phase lasts about 2 weeks.
  3. Telogen - This is the resting phase and consists of the hairs that are normally shed with the little white bulb on the end. This phase may last up to 2 months and represents only about 5 - 10% of the hair follicles at any given time.
There are several causes of hair loss. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. We will limit our discussion to preventable hair loss. Hair grooming techniques and chemicals are by far the most common causes of hair loss in African - Americans.

Traction Alopecia

Hair loss cause by tight ponytails, braids and rollers is called Traction Alopecia. This type of hair loss usually requires repeated episodes of pulling the hair to tight along the edges. Many who have this problem consider it hereditary because it is often seen in several generations of the same family. Nothing could be further from the truth. This type of hair loss is 100 percent preventable. It is important that everyone who observes the early signs of this condition help to educate others on it's causes and prevention. The following photographs should help one recognize the early signs of this condition and what can result if corrective measures are not taken.

  Early Stage of Traction Alopecia Advanced Stage of Traction Alopecia

The above type of hair loss can be prevented by:
  1. Keeping braids and ponytails loose around the edges
  2. Avoiding sponge, wire and rollers with pins
  3. Using plastic rollers that have a top that holds the hair in place
  4. Pin curling the hair.
Chemical Hair Loss

Another very preventable form of hair loss is that caused by chemicals. This is usually caused by over processing and poor technique. The use of hair dyes along with relaxers can also lead to breakage. This type of hair loss is often referred to as shedding. Hair shedding is the natural process of hair replacement. These hairs come out from the scalp and not off the portion of the hair that is outside the scalp. Fortunately breakage does not cause permanent hair loss and proper use of chemicals and conditioning agents can prevent this.

Dr. Wilborn is much more concerned about a much more severe form of hair loss he believes is caused by improper and excessive use of chemicals. This type of hair loss has been referred to as The Follicular Degeneration Syndrome. This hair loss is manifested by the progressive loss of hair follicles usually starting near the crown and spreading toward the front and sides. The following sequence of events is what Dr. Wilborn believes causes the problem.
  • Scalp hairs are arranged in clusters of 2 or more hairs called follicular units. There is a small space between each unit. At the most only one hair per unit would be in Telogen at any point in time. The Telogen hair rests very close to the epidermis
  • The top of the head is like a shelf. Relaxer applied directly to the scalp or very close to the scalp seeps into the pores of the hair follicle. Hair follicles that are in Telogen (resting hairs) are damaged by the relaxer and do not reproduce a replacement hair. The hair follicle cycles every three years or longer. It would take two or more cycles before an entire follicular unit is destroyed. When this happens that area of the scalp has no hairs emerging from the scalp. As more hair is loss, thinning of the hair in the affected areas become apparent. Early detection and corrective measures is the only way to prevent the severe hair loss depicted in the photographs below

How do we prevent this type of hair loss?
  1. Avoid putting relaxers directly on the scalp
  2. Use the DPL Hair Root Conditioner as a base
  3. Rinse the hair and scalp thoroughly in all areas
  4. Neutralize with the DPL Hair Root Conditioner as directed on package
  5. Do not re-touch more often than every 8 weeks or longer.
